How to Do a Patch Test Before Trying a New Skincare Product

Share

Trying a new skincare product? Before you go all in, hit pause, and patch test. It’s the easiest way to avoid breakouts, irritation, or worse, an allergic reaction.

What Is a Patch Test and Why It Matters?

A patch test is a simple step to check how your skin reacts to a new product before applying it to your entire face. Even natural or clean products can cause a reaction, especially if you have sensitive, acne-prone, or reactive skin.

In fact, research from the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that contact dermatitis from skincare is more common than most people realise, especially with fragrant or active formulations.

How to Patch Test in 3 Simple Steps

  1. Choose the Spot: Use a discreet area like the inside of your wrist, behind your ear, or along your jawline.

  2. Apply and Wait: Dab a small amount of the product. Leave it on for 24 hours. Don’t wash it off or rub it.

  3. Watch for Reactions: Redness, itching, bumps, or burning? That’s a no-go. If there's no reaction, you're good to use it on your face.

Pro Tip:

Do a patch test every time you introduce a new product, especially exfoliants, serums, or anything with actives like Vitamin C or retinol.

At Chapter Skin, we believe in skin that feels good, not confused. That’s why our products are free from sulphates, parabens, and harsh chemicals, and made in fresh batches every few months. Whether you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, our no-nonsense, natural skincare is designed to be safe for all. Still, every skin is unique, so patch test, and let your skin guide you.

After all, every chapter starts with care.
